Maison Montagnan is a delightful chambre d’hote, situated in the
traditional village of Hèches in the lower foothills of the central
Pyrenees. Check the map link below for the location of Hèches.
We are in the district of Neste Baronnies, which is surrounded by fairytale
countryside against the backdrop of the magnificent Pyrénées
and the famous National Park. Close by are the caves of prehistoric
caves at La Bastide and Gargas, and the charming hamlet of Héchettes
with its castle tower just over the river Neste. The local market town
of Lannemezan is 15 minutes drive to the north with fast connecting
road and rail links to Pau, Lourdes, Tarbes and Toulouse (1 hour by
car). To the south, Spain is only 40 km away via a tunnel.
En route to Spain, in the Vallée d’Aure,
you will come past the quaint market town of Arreau, situated at the
confluent of two rivers, with its attractive Renaissance buildings
and Romanesque church. The sophisticated spa town and ski resort of
St Lary de Soulan is another popular destination in the central Pyrénées.

Maison Montagnan is set at the edge of Hèches and offers a unique
bed and breakfast experience for lovers of truly ancient ‘shabby
chic’. It is one of the earliest buildings in the village, dating
back to 1677. The building is rich in architectural detail with fireplaces,
oak floors, a listed staircase and rustic walls. There is a small south-facing
garden where one can have breakfast, coffee, or supper in the late evening
sun surrounded by stunning mountain scenery.

Hèches is a one-street village with a bar, restaurant and two
small shops. If you take a stroll down the village main street
you will see the dates of the stone houses engraved above doorways,
pitched slate roofs, the faded letterings of old shop signs, and
pretty gardens behind ornate railings. Hèches won first prize
in 2007 in a ‘flowers in bloom’ (la ville fleurie) competition.
Right at the other end of the village, you will find the restaurant,
l’Union, which serves value for money lunchtime meals. During
your stay we will give you tips on fine eating places in the area.

The bedrooms of Maison Montagnan have been tastefully furnished with
antique furniture. There is a separate toilet and shower room. In the
lounge downstairs, with its huge open fireplace, there is a comfortable
sitting area where you can chat with the hosts and watch French television.
Breakfast is served in the dining room or garden. You can choose from
a full English breakfast or our Continental buffet breakfast which includes
croissants and bread, cold meats and cheese, cereals and yoghurts, jam
and honey, coffee or a selection of teas, and fresh fruit.
